It’s been a slow year, but towards the end of 2012 I had worked on a “new” sound for me to play with.. a somewhat darker, aggressive throw back to solid house music from the 90’s. I was very pleased with the result. Here’s the first clip of two songs from around that time.

Taking a break from house music usually yields in some interesting experiments with sound that I love very much. This music tends to be more in tune with me and represents an aspect of my life and my being that doesn’t often get exposure via my music.

Some of my most-listened to songs on SoundCloud will appear on the album, and I hope to have it out this fall (late Nov/early Dec).

Mrastrong - If I Could Be

My “Mrastrong” project is one that is amassing a nice collection of beastrumental type work. Akin to the influences in my life of DJ Shadow, Wax Tailor, RJD2, and influences in my personal life (my best friend Ian, who got me into turntablism, mixing, and everything electronic back in the mid 90’s).

Here is the latest result of a quick session at my current pseudo-studio in our new home in Seattle. It’s a little rough around the edges but a fun one to bob your head to.

I was driving into work today and thought about the timeline of works I have:

City Shadows, circa 1996-2001

Well of Souls, circa 2002-2007

This Modern Depression, 2007-2009

<next project>, 2008-2010

<next project>, 2010

<next project>, 2010-2011

All of these are LPs with intentional track arrangement, artwork, and presentation. While I’ve been somewhat bashful and hesitant to release them, I always come to the conclusion that they are worthy of release to the public in an independent fashion (at least up to 2010, with the final 2010-2011 project looking for a home on a label). These collections of art display my work, growth, and unique genres throughout time. They are almost a bonus for folks who find me by any form of my “Sliptide” music and enjoy knowing more about an artist, or perhaps enjoy different styles of electronic music beyond what they were introduced to of mine.

This post is convincing me to keep releasing these materials. Lol.

Do I Publish All of My Music?

After meeting with Seattle SoundCloud folks last week, I’m taking a hard look at nearly 3 unreleased LPs worth of music that span 2009-2011. I pushed “This Modern Depression” out, so why not continue down the path for an LP that wraps 2009-2010 together?

The project already has a name, the music is done, the songs are in order. I just need artwork, notes, and the business side of things to be completed. Do people want to hear more music of varying styles throughout the years of my career, or should I zero in on a smaller spectrum of sound?

Psh.. I don’t know. Identity as a musician is always a tough thing to sort out, but I need to keep in touch with WHY I’m making music— I love it, and I love so many different styles/sounds that I should continue doing what I do best… which is a little bit of everything! ;)

It’s frustrating, looking at these three distinct collections of music. Each has their own feeling, identity, sound, style.. I want to share them with the world, so perhaps the answer is to continue down a road of self-published work that fans can discover, listen to, and hopefully incorporate into their landscape and enjoy.

There is a lot of garbage/trash that will never see the light of day, but the projects/works/songs/albums I speak of are of quality enough that *I* enjoy them, some of my friends enjoy them, and perhaps fans and potential fans would enjoy them.

Do I release and curate these previous works/albums, even if they clash genre between each one? (Example.. “City Shadows” vs “This Modern Depression”)
